‘Big Boys’ On Selfie Craze

It seems some of Ghana’s ‘big boys’ have adopted the latest celebrity act of taking selfies.
A selfie is a type of self-portrait photograph typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone with the aim of sharing it on social media.
Two of the fastest spreading photos among social media users in Ghana are that of President John Mahama in a pose with hip-life pioneer Reggie Rockstone and the musician’s wife, Zilla.
The other is that of Nana Akufo-Addo, the 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with his youngest child, Dokua Akufo-Addo.
Though it is not certain the circumstances under which the President’s selfie with Rockstone was taken, the musician discussed his new song titled, ‘Selfie’ with the first gentleman of the country.
He was quoted by myjoyonline.com as saying: “He (the President) was the first ‘guy’ I told about ‘Selfie’ (song). He also knows what it was and knows about Obama’s own selfie.”
Nana Addo’s selfie with his daughter was taken on his 70th birthday barely a fortnight ago.
Selfies were hitherto common among celebrities and youngsters but it seems some of the ‘big boys’ are getting hooked onto it.
Just a couple of days ago, Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, was reported to have posed for a selfie with some youngsters during Palm Sunday celebrations at the St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.
The dust is yet to settle on the controversy generated by the selfie that captured American President Barack Obama with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and British Prime Minister David Cameron during the funeral of Nelson Mandela.
On Wednesday, European media reported that a teenage boy who attempted to take a selfie in front of an oncoming train got his face kicked violently by the train’s conductor.
The teenager, Jared Michael, posted a video of the action-packed 10 seconds on YouTube, explaining, “I tried to take a selfie while a train passed a ‘safe’ distance behind. I guess I was still too close and got kicked in the head. I messed up.”
