Implementing greater change in communities

The Executive Director of Legal Resources Centre (LRC) a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Mrs. Daphne Lariba Nabila has suggested that organisations that seeks to ensure human rights for all comes together and use each other’s knowledge and resources, to implement greater change in the communities.

Mrs. Nabila said this at the 2014 annual Conference of Amnesty International (AI), Ghana, held at Winneba, on the theme “Amnesty International Ghana: Building Partnership to Consolidate Human Right Impact”.

The meeting that coincide with United Nations Day of stopping Torture against fellow human beings, the members embarked on a float through the principal streets of the town amidst brass band music to create awareness on the need to stop torture in the society.

She said AI Ghana over 50 years has been committed to ending human rights abuses which they have worked endlessly towards the vision of ensuring that every person enjoys all right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Right which they need commendation and encouragement.

According to Mrs Nabila, the theme AI Ghana under this year’s celebration was loadable and stated that, one organisation may not be able to make all the change they want, but hoped coming together as one body, can have a far-reaching impact on multiple levels of society.

Mrs. Nabila said, there are coalition/partnerships spring up around thematic area which her organisation belongs to some of them.

“Notwithstanding such coalitions is formidable force which much is achieved in implementing pragrammes and projects”, she added.

The Executive Director of LRC stressed the need of NGO’s to continue to asked themselves of what kind of partnerships they want, who they have to partner with and how to sustain such partnership to effective advocacy towards the protection of the right of all persons.

Mr. Lawrence Amesu, President of AI Ghana earlier said, the meeting was to review their previous year’s activities and strategies to help forge ahead to implement programs and projects to stop torture in the society.

He therefore call on all and sundry to support Amnesty’s Stop Torture campaign which he hope collectively as people will stand between the torturers and the tortured, sending a clear message to the powers that be.

Mrs. Jennifer Akubia, Board Chairperson of LRC said, certainly there a lot of hurdles to clear, but hoped with unity of purpose every challenge will become a learning point where experiences would be learned and gained.

“It will be great, if we use our strengths to deal with our weaknesses in order to take advantage of the many opportunities out there”, she added. GNA
