Voting in the District level Elections gets off to a smooth start in Kumasi

GNA – Voting in the District Level Elections got off to a smooth start in polling centres across the Kumasi Metropolis.

At many of the centres, the exercise began on schedule – at exactly 0700 hours without any glitches.

During a tour by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Team about an hour into the voting, voters were seen trickling in one after the other to cast their ballots.

Though there were not long queues, election officers, the GNA spoke to, did not describe that as an indication of a low turn-out.

They said it was normal with elections in the metropolis, where voters would often go and ply their businesses in the early mornings and come back to vote before the close of polls.

At the Asokwa Extension Electoral Area in the Asokwa Municipality, everything was on course peacefully, as the few voters waited for their turn to cast their votes.

The area has 11 polling stations with three candidates in the race to represent the people in the assembly.

At the Asokwa polling station ‘A’, a total of 17 people had cast their ballots as of 0815 hours, when the GNA visited the place, while the Asokwa polling station ‘B’ had seen eight (8) people, voted as of 0830 hours.

Security personnel were on hand to maintain law and order at the polling centres.

At the Ayeduase R/C Basic School polling station ‘A’ in the Oforikrom Municipality, a total of five people had cast their ballots as of 0740 hours and at Ayeduase RC Basic School Polling Station ‘B’ 10 people had finished voting as of 0755 hours.

Mr. Michael Mawuli, the Presiding Officer at the Tunde Ayigya Zongo polling centre, told the GNA that 38 out of the 611 registered voters had voted, two-and-a-half hours into the exercise.
