Cabinet Approves Spousal Property Bill, Spouses to Get Equal Share of Property

Cabinet has approved the property right of spouses’ bill which is expected to be forwarded to parliament for passage when legislators come back from their break.
Included in the bill is a suggestion to allow couple who have cohabited as spouse for more than five years get equal share of whatever property acquired during the period.

This was confrmed by eputy Minister for Information Murtala Mohammed at the Flagstaff house, revealing that cabinet has approved the property rights of spouses’ bill.

“there are instances where the woman contributes her bid in generating to the property in the marriage but since according to customary law, the woman does not have any will over the property.Cabinet and government thinks that it is unfair that is why they have approved it.”
