DISEC visit tragedy scene and grieving families – Newmont Mine incident
[Backstory: Last Saturday 6 persons were recorded dead whiles 4 others suffered various degrees of injuries when a pit collapsed in Ahafo. Workers were from CONSAR Company which is a sub-contractor of Newmont Ghana Gold – Ahafo]
Members of the District Security Council(DISEC) have today visited the scene where some workers of CONSAR lost their lives whiles others recorded injuries.
The members include the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North District, the District Chief Executive (DCE),the District Police Commander, Head of Fire Service, the Prison Service Head as well as media personnel.
The Executives of Newmont Ahafo warmly welcomed them and took them to the plant side where the executives explained how the incident occured and allowed DISEC members to ask questions for clarity.
The Communications Manager for Newmont Ahafo, Azumah Agbeko, stated that Newmont as a company would assist the affected families throughout this difficult period as well as assist in the burial process.
Aside this, there would be an undisclosed compensation package for the affected families.
The MP for the district ,Hon. Joseph Dahah highlighted the purpose of the visit by saying at the time it happened himself and the DCE were not around and as such found it necessary to visit the scene firsthand upon their return. “In our culture it is best to console with grieving families so that is what we are doing” MP said.
Hon. Dahah said the DISEC will ensure that the appropriate compensations are given the families and there will be absolute peace before, during and after the funeral so all should rest assured.
The DCE, Hon. Anthony Adjei Mensah also disclosed that he will be grateful if the package from Newmont would support those with children in their education.
He commended Newmont, Consar and the aggrieved for the cordial relations between the parties.
