Ghana’s Electoral Commission Backs Down on Registration
THE CHAIRMAN of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, has postponed the registration exercise meant to capture those who have just turned 18 years as well as those who could not register during the last registration. According to him, the registration, which was initially scheduled for June 20 to 29, 2014, has been postponed to late July, due to unavailability of teachers and other electoral officers to undertake the exercise.
The decision was taken during an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at the EC’s head office in Accra to discuss the audit of the voters’ register.
Meanwhile, at the time of putting DAILY GUIDE to bed, the EC was yet to agree on the call for an audit of the voters’ register before a new registration exercise could be carried out.
The EC was arguing that there was no time for an audit of the register.
However, the political parties said it was imperative for the Commission to conduct the audit to authenticate the register.
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, had earlier said it was very important for the EC to audit the register.
He said general secretaries of all the major political parties had appended their signatures to a letter under the auspices of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).
According to him, they had asked the Electoral Commission for an emergency meeting to address the concerns of the parties.
Kwabena Agyepong said a repetition of an election petition in the next election would not be in the best interest of Ghana.
