Accra, Mar. 11, GNA – Former Liverpool FC Legend John Barnes is in Ghana as guest of this year’s Standard Chartered Ghana Trophy 2016 tournament billed on Saturday, March 12, at the Lizzy Sports Complex, Accra.
A skillful left wing player, Barnes played for Liverpool from 1987 to 1997 during, which he won the then top-flight First Division twice and the FA Cup twice and also played for the England national team 79 times.
During his playing career Barnes was named the PFA(Professional Football Association) Players’ Player of the Year twice (in 1987–88 and 1989–90) and the Football Writers’ Association, Footballer of the Year once (in 1987–88). In 2005 he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
His visit is to interact with the media, run soccer clinic sessions for children, interact with a cross section of Standard Chartered staff, clients and stakeholders.
The SC Road to Anfield is an international 5-aside football tournament that provides local markets with a platform to actively engage its clients, staff and stakeholders.
It is linked to the Bank’s Liverpool FC sponsorship where winners of the competition in the various markets receive an all expenses paid trip to Anfied, the home of Liverpool FC to join other winners to play in a ten-team tournament to determine which team emerges as the best for a particular year.
The winning team will join other teams from other countries at the finals in Anfield, England in April.
