Murder: Robbers kill truck driver in brazen attack on Accra-Kumasi highway
On Wednesday, 21st May 2014, a 32 year old long haul driver was murdered on the Accra-Kumasi highway by a suspected gang of armed robbers. The robbers also allegedly intercepted a VIP passenger bus where they assaulted and robbed all on board the vehicle leaving three passengers with various degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were rushed to the Nkawkaw Government Hospital where two were successfully treated and discharged.
Witnesses described the armed robbers as men dressed in hoodies who laid in ambush near the Breku Forest, at about 5 km from Dadieso. They may have signaled for the driver to stop and when he failed to do so, one of the robbers fired at the driver sending a fatal bullet into this forehead. The truck, now out of control veered off the highway and into a bush.
The robbers boarded the crashed truck which was loaded with sugar and rice and proceeded to rob the other occupants. Another truck, driven by Bismark Adomako Yeboah, on seeing a crashed truck stopped to offer help. The robbers quickly emerged from the crashed vehicle and forced all occupants to lie face down on the ground as they robbed them as well.
A Kumasi bound VIP passenger bus which appeared on the scene was also attacked. The robbers allegedly shot out the windows and doors of the driver’s side of the bus when they were unable to get in with what witnesses described as a pump action shot gun before robbing all passengers on board. 3 passengers suffered injuries but there were no fatalities on the bus.
The body of the deceased truck driver, identified as Hamida Diary, was sent to the morgue at Konongo Government Hospital.
