Muslim parents urged to put the girl-child in school

GNA – Muslim parents have been urged to provide the opportunity for the girl-child to pursue academic careers.

Ms. Joyce Aduama, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Education Director, said they should not be forced into early marriage.

She indicated that education was the most effective weapon for fighting poverty and that why premium must be put on it.

She made the call in a speech read for her at a durbar held to raise funds to build an Islamic Education Office at Abuakwa.

Ms. Aduama said the way to lift women out of poverty was to give them reasonable level of education.

She noted that it was by so doing that they would be empowered and become financially independent.

She reminded them that the Muslim Holy book, the Quran, speaks about women with high regard and said that reinforced the importance of offering them the opportunity to go to school.

She again called for parents to live up to their responsibilities to children – to give them adequate protection to ensure their growth and development.

Mr. Mohammed Salisu, Ashanti Regional Deputy Manager of the Islamic Education Unit (IEU), said Islam was a religion of peace and asked Muslims to reject violence and extremism.

They should be law-abiding and accept to live in peace and harmony with everybody, he added.
