Muslims Rights Front group protest against violation of their rights.
A group calling itself Muslims Rights Front on Friday petitioned the President to personally intervene to put a stop to the violation of human rights of Muslims in the country.
It said Muslim students are forced to attend Church services in many second cycle institutions while other schools prevent Muslim students from observing their five daily prayers on campus.
The group said Muslim female students were also prevented from observing their veil or Hijab on campus and Muslim professional such as nurses, bankers in the public and civil services were preventing from observing their veil as well.
These were contained in a petition by Haij Saeed Jallo, Convener of the group, who presented it to the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo, for onward transmission to the President at Sekondi.
Earlier, Muslims had gone on a peace march from Takoradi to Sekondi after their Friday prayers to draw public attention to the violations of their human rights.
The group urged the President to adopt urgent measures to find lasting solution to these human right violations which has gone on for a long time.
It called on human rights institutions in the country in particular the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the National Peace Council to take steps to improve the human rights situation of the Ghanaian Muslim.
The group urged Parliament especially the Muslim Caucus in Parliament to ensure the “full adherence to the provisions of Article 12 (2) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana”.
Some the placards carried by the protesters read “Our human rights are what we are fighting for”, “I am a Muslim and a citizen of Ghana” and “Respect our right of freedom of worship”.
