No Bail for South African man who killed and burned his girlfriend
The 27-year-old man arrested for the murder of Karabo Mokoena has been remanded in custody until his bail hearing on Wednesday.
Sandile Mantsoe appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Friday morning on charges of premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice.
The burnt body of his girlfriend was discovered in Lyndhurst after she was reported missing by her parents.
Mantsoe was arrested this week and made his first court appearance on Friday afternoon.
Karabo’s uncle Tshepo Mokoena says the family is still devastated.
“The parents and children are not coping, even after seeing the accused, I think it makes the matters worse.”
It’s emerged that a case of assault was already being investigated by police at the time of her death against her boyfriend.
Her uncle Tshepo Mokoena said: “We need to also teach young boys that if you have an argument with your girlfriend maybe walk away. I’m teaching boys raised without fathers that if you have a problem come to us. All that I was teaching people for years is coming back to me, it’s terribly shocking.”
Meanwhile, Gauteng MEC for social development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza has sent a team of social workers to Mokoena’s family to offer psychological support.
MEC spokesperson Mbangwa Xaba said: “On the basis that the MEC and the government could decide on the psychological support they could provide, she will announce the findings of the team on Sunday when she visits the family.”
