R. Kelly faces Federal sex crimes in New York after being arrested in Chicago
Superstar R&B singer R. Kelly was arrested on new federal sex crimes charges he will face in Brooklyn federal court, law enforcement sources told the Daily News.
Kelly, whose long history of sex assault allegations was detailed in a Lifetime TV documentary in January, was busted in Chicago by NYPD detectives and federal Homeland Security investigators, the sources said.
The charges involve sex trafficking, a law enforcement source told The News.
Kelly was arrested outside his home in Chicago’s Trump Tower while he walked his dog, the Chicago Tribune reported.
NYPD investigators met in January with Faith Rodgers, one of R. Kelly’s chief accusers. Rodgers’ lawyer, Gloria Allred, said at the time that Rodgers was “doing her duty to provide information.”
Rodgers sued Kelly in Manhattan in 2018 claiming he forced her to have “non-permissive, painful and abusive sex” in a New York hotel in 2017, and knowingly infected her with herpes.
She said Kelly manipulated her in a year-long relationship in which he locked her up in rooms and vehicles as “punishment” for “failing to please” him.
“I trusted him and he betrayed my trust,” Rodgers told reporters at a news conference in January. “Once I recognized my worth, I knew I had to walk away.”
All the charges brought against Kelly so far have been in state court in Chicago. They stretch over a period of years.
Kelly was charged in February with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims, three of whom were between the ages of 13 and 17. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.
Prosecutors brought 11 new counts of sex assault and sex abuse in May. They include four counts of aggravated sexual assault which are Class X felonies and carry a maximum 30-year sentence if convicted.[More New York] Cops find human leg on the rocks off Coney Island, then discover the rest of the body stuck underwater »
