Snapchat Is Now The Most Popular Social Network Among Teens

Photo sharing app Snapchat cruised onto the scene back in early 2011 and quickly gained a reputation as a place where shady folk reveled in the idea that they could send messages and photos that eventually vanish into thin air but recently, the app has become way more than just a way to slide into and out of DMs in a stealth manner.

It seems like more people than ever before are using Snapchat to post their quick photo and video updates. It’s where we can see North West’s cornrows before they make their way to Instagram, where we experienced SXSW from the comfort of our beds all because DJ Brittany Sky kept us in the loop and where DJ Khaled continues to provide us with the major keys to living our best lives.

According to a new study though, Snapchat is more popular than Facebook, Twitter and even Instagram among the teen demographic.

The Piper Jaffray study “Taking Stock With Teens” polled about 6,500 U.S. teens to see what they felt was the most important social network, and Snapchat took 28% of votes. Instagram came in close-second with 27%, followed by Twitter and Facebook.

The survey, which is done semi-annually, shows Snapchat’s rise over the past year. In the spring 2015 survey, Instagram was the top social network, with Snapchat coming in fourth behind Twitter and Facebook. In the fall, Snapchat edged out Facebook for third.

Unsurprisingly, teens tend to be more interested in viewing pictures and videos rather than text-focused media seen on Twitter and Facebook. Nobody has time to read those lengthy epic Facebook rants and only a select few Twitter tales go viral.

Snapchat has been making the most changes and updates over the last year, introducing things like Snapchat Discover and debuting live coverage at the Oscars. The social network has expanded into more entertaining areas like adding in more and more video and picture filters, as well as the popular face swapping feature. The platform is consistently updating to keep itself interesting and fresh for users, while other social networks have mostly remained unchanged.
