Wa All Stars clinch 2015/2016 GPL title
GNA – The President of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi’s club Wa All Stars clinched the 2015/2016 Ghana Premier League (GPL) after defeating second placed Aduana Stars 2-1 at the Wa Park on Wednesday.
Paul Asare de Vries of Wa All Stars put his side ahead in the opening stages of the match before Bright Adjei of Aduana levelled the scoreline.
A controversial penalty awarded to Wa All Stars in the 79th and converted by Saddick Alhassan gave the Wa based club the league title for the first time. The penalty award, which was hotly challenged by Aduana, saw the players and the technical team leaving the pitch in protest for over eight minutes, but they returned later after calm was restored to continue the game.
Wa All Star in their 29 outings, won 15, drew 6 and lost 8 accruing 51 points out of a possible 87.
Ahead of the penultimate clash with Aduana, the champions were lying second on the league log on goal difference but with the same number of points, 48.
The victory will see Nyantakyi’s side pocketing USD 30,000 as their prize money for winning the league.
