Teen suffers concussion during soccer game, wakes up from coma speaking fluent Spanish
¡Que Loco!
A Georgia teen suffered a severe concussion while playing in a soccer game—and woke up speaking fluent Spanish, despite never speaking the language before.
Reuben Nsemoh, 16, plays goalie for an elite, traveling soccer team based just outside of Atlanta. During a game last month, the high school sophomore was kicked in the head causing convulsions, WSB Radio reported.
“The ambulance came and they said he was having seizures because he might have bleeding in the brain,” coach Bruno Kalonji told WSB Radio.
The concussion left Nsemoh in a coma for three days. When he woke up, he could no longer speak English but was fluent in Spanish—a language he had never spoken.
Nsemoh told WSB Radio, presumably after he regained his English, that he had Spanish-speaking friends that exposed him to the language. He figures the exposure played a role in the bizarre language change.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traumatic brain injuries can cause both short and long term changes in language, sensation and emotion.
Nsemoh has had two other concussions while playing soccer and says the sport is his life’s passion.
“It’s the ony thing I want to do for my career,” he told WSB.
Kalonji said he will require Nsemoh to wear a helmet while playing going foward.
“This can happen even at practice. And if kids already have two concussion of three, it’s recommended that they wear one,” he said.
A friend of Nsemoh’s family set up a GoFundMe page to raise moeny for mounting medical expenses.
“Unfortunately, Reuben’s seizures have not stopped. Neither have the family’s medical bills,” the fundraising page reads.
So far, the crowdfunding effort raised $9,651 of their $25, 000 goal.
