One of Ghana’s finest female gospel artistes, Mercy Twum Ampofo popularly known on the gospel music scene as Ohemaa Mercy, says she has not entirely retired from the teaching profession as many people might conjecture.
The prolific singer, who joined the gospel music industry in 2004 and a teacher by profession, told Adom FM’s Entertainment Hall, hosted by Mike 2, that she was on leave from the teaching service since it would be difficult to combine both teaching and singing.
According to the enterprising gospel star, teaching remains a passion but she has been blessed with a talent for music and singing which she claimed inspire people to get closer to God.
The gospel artiste, with over ten years’ experience in the music industry, and has five albums to her credit, is working tirelessly on her new album to be released soon.
The ‘Eye-Adwene-Na-Enye-Se-Asei’ artiste commended Big Ben Music Production for supporting her to get to where she is now, adding that gospel group, Daughters of Glorious Jesus, had been her source of inspiration in her musical career.
Ohemaa Mercy’s releases attracted seven nominations for the 2006 Ghana Music Awards but couldn’t win any of the awards. She later won the ‘Discovery of The Year’ in the gospel music category in the same year.
In 2007 Ohemaa released a new album entitled, ‘Edin Jesus’ and the album was very successful, as over 875,000 copies of the CDs were sold in 2008.
This album won Ohemaa 10 nominations for the 2008 Ghana Music Awards. It was the highest number of nominations so far in respect of a single album in the history of the Awards Scheme. She won three of the major trophies.
Ohemaa Mercy in November 2009, released a massive hit album entitled, ‘Wobeye Kese’ which won the heart of many across African the continent and the world at large.
She won the Gospel Artiste of The Year 2010 for the second time during the Ghana Music Awards ceremony.
