1. The Carrot, the Egg, and the Coffee Beans
A young woman went to her mother and complained that life was too hard. She did not know how she was going to make it.
Her mother took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water, and placed them on a high fire. In the first pot, she put a carrot; in the second, an egg; and in the third, ground coffee beans. After 20 minutes, she turned off the burners, fished out the items, and asked her daughter what she saw.
- The carrot had been hard, strong, and unrelenting, but after sitting in the boiling water, it became soft and weak.
- The egg had been fragile with a thin outer shell protecting a liquid interior, but the boiling water hardened the inside.
- The coffee beans were unique; after being in the boiling water, they had changed the water itself.
The Moral: Adversity, hardship, and pressure happen to everyone—the question is, how do you respond? Do you soften like the carrot, harden emotionally like the egg, or do you transform the situation around you for the better?
