Young man to spend 25 years in jail for conspiracy
An Accra circuit court on Monday sentenced one Daniel Kojo Arthur, unemployed, to 25 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit crime.
Daniel pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit crime and was convicted on his own plea.
He will however, re-appear before the court for trial on the charges of robbery and being in possession of stolen items to which he pleaded not guilty, on June 16.
Presiding judge, Mr Francis Obiri said he took into consideration the fact that the convict was a first offender, and had not wasted the time of the court and also pleaded for leniency.
Prosecuting, Chief Superintendent of Police Duuti Tuaruka told the court that the complainant is an Indian National.
He said on June 1, at about 0030, the complainant was on his way home from work and on reaching Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout; he was approached by an unknown lady, who proposed to him.
He said few minutes into the meeting the lady on the pavement, the convict and four others now at large arrived at the scene and suddenly the lady began to accuse the complainant of having sex with her.
The prosecution said Daniel and his accomplices attacked the complainant with a knife and a pair of scissors, subjected him to beatings and robbed him.
“Items they took from him include Samsung Galaxy S3 valued at GH ?C750, cash of GH ?235, driver’s license and Non Ghanaian National ID Card,” he added.
Chief Superintendent Tuaruka said the convict and his accomplices after robbing the victim pushed him to the ground and took to their heels.
He said, however, when they were escaping from the scene, two policemen at post at a Bank nearby spotted the complainant running after them and screaming for help.
The policemen responded to his distress call and arrested Daniel.
He said a search on the convict revealed a stolen mobile phone belonging to a student and a pair of scissors hidden in his pocket.
The prosecution said the complainant identified the pair of scissors retrieved from the Daniel as one of the objects used in robbing him.
The convict was later handed over to the Kaneshie District Headquarters where a report was made and the victim was issued with a medical form to attend hospital. GNA
