You don’t need money to produce a good movie – Hollywood star.

Hollywood movie star D. J. Cotrona, from the hit television series ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’, has disclosed that one does not need money to produce a good movie.

According to him, contrary to the belief that one needs a huge budget to be able to successfully produce a movie, producers only need a vision.

Movie producers in Africa have over the years attributed their inability to produce quality movies to the lack of finance.

Many have said, with the right financial support, be it from government or corporate organisations, they will be able to come out  with quality productions that can compete with movies from Hollywood.

Cotrona, who has starred in several productions including the movie, G.I. Joe: Retaliation , speaking at the M-Net International Press Junket at the 2015 MultiChoice Africa Content Showcase in Mauritius, said vision is important than money.

Using Robert Rodriguez, the director of ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ as an example, the actor said “Robert is a director that famously built his career on making films from no money and then when you watch them, they look gigantic.”

Robert has directed successful and groundbreaking film sagas such as the Mexico Trilogy (consisting of El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico), From Dusk till Dawn and the 2014 TV series, and the Spy Kids films, as well as The Faculty, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, Sin City, Planet Terror and Machete.

He is famously known to have shot the action flick El Mariachi in Spain with just $7,000, an amount raised by his friend Carlos Gallardo as well as participating in medical research studies. The production won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 1993.

He is a friend and frequent collaborator of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. In December 2013, Rodriguez launched his own cable television channel, El Rey.

Born Donald Joseph “D. J.” Cotrona said there are lot of lessons to be learnt from Robert Rodriguez.

“There’s a big creative lesson that we learn from Robert and that’s, you don’t need a lot of money to make something look really compelling and be really interesting.”

“All you need is a personal style, a personal view point and …the money doesn’t matter, what matters is your vision,” Cotrona noted.

Another popular actor  Zane Holtz, answering a question as to whether it is difficult or easy to break into Hollywood, said one can easily get a role so far as he or she is good for the part.

He said, “I think it comes down to actors being right for the part. I don’t think it matters where you come from. I’m Canadian and I’m playing a bank robber from Kansas in Texas and now Mexico.”

Zane added, “I think if you are talented and you are good at what you do, you can make it in the States. It just comes down to being,” right for the part.
