Religious bodies encouraged to ensure peaceful elections
GNA – The West Akyem Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Madam Modesta Annie Sapaty has appealed to the religious bodies to help ensure that that the December 7 elections are conducted peacefully.
This, the religious bodies could do is to impress upon their members on the need to eschew all forms of electoral violence in the run-up to the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Madam Sapaty made the appeal at Asamankese in the Eastern Region during a meeting between the NCCE, the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee and religious bodies in the area.
She observed that even though the stakes were very high in this year’s elections, it was very important that the citizenry conducted themselves in a manner that would ensure the sustainability of the relative peace prevailing in the country.
Lack of funds Madam Sapaty said was a major hindrance inhibiting the effective outreach programmes of the Commission and therefore appealed to the religious bodies and non-governmental organisations for financial support to carry out its activities.
Reverend Cannon R.K. Aburam, Chairman of the West Akyem Inter-Party Dialogue Committee, said it was untenable for a single blood of any Ghanaian to be shed in the quest for political power by any politician.
Any electoral violence in the country, Rev Aburam observed would naturally affect religious activities in the country and therefore enjoined all religious bodies to pray for the peace of the country.
Rev George Edubaa, Chairman of the Local Council of Churches said there was the need to step up effort by all to ensure violent-free and peaceful elections across the length and breadth of the country.
