Ignore reports about hike in transport fares – GPRTU/GRTCC

GNA – The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have urged the public to disregard report circulating that transport fares have been increased by 20 per cent.

A statement issued jointly by the transport bodies and signed by Mr Kwame Kuma, the National Chairman of GPRTU and Mr Ben Amoabeng – Peprah, the National Chairman of the

GRTCC, in Accra, said no decision had been made on transport fares.

The statement, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said, “There are some group of people who want to bring the reputation of the Association to disrepute. We want to assure the general public that there is no such increase and the information should not be entertained.”

The Statement said the transport bodies had an agreement with Ministry of Transport to review fares periodically.

It explained that Per an Administrative Instrument, a 10 per cent increase of reduction in fuel price must trigger a review in fare prices.

“Since the June 2018 fare increases, the cumulative adjustment in fuel prices is less than the 10 per cent,” it said.

“We are by this statement appealing to our members and the general public to disregard the purported increase and comply with the existing fares”.

The statement urged transport operators to bear with them until further notice and also asked for the cooperation of all stakeholders.
