Abedi: Ghana lack succession plan
The football maestro has lashed out at the Ghana Football Association and other stakeholders in charge of football for turning a blind eye in coming up with a development plan
Ghana football legend Abedi Ayew ‘Pele’ is worried that the absence of a succession plan for the Black Stars will adversely affect the team soon.
The former Black Stars captain insists that most of the players are close to calling time on their career and until Ghana fashion out a plan to systematically draft junior players into the senior side then the country is in for trouble.
“We go to juvenile tourneys – Under-17 and U-20 – with the sole aim to win trophies, so the players who win the tournaments get contracts and in no time they vanish into thin air,” Abedi told the Daily Guide.
“The focus should be on developing players for the future that is the practice outside, so they go into tournaments to develop the players to feed their national teams. We don’t have a development plan, which is very sad, so we excel at the juvenile level but fail to win trophies at the highest level.”
He added: “Age is not on the part of most of the senior players, and my worry is, who takes over from them? Apart from Dede [Andre Ayew], who is playing in one of the top flight leagues, most of his colleagues who won the U-20 World Cup are struggling.”
