Exclusive Infotainment Interview with Sean Taylor
Blakk Rasta, a Ghanaian Reggae Musician and Host of Taxi Driver on Hitz Fm has said that Dancehall music in Ghana will not go anywhere because it’s all about Patois and if you can’t speak Patois you can’t do dancehall. He went ahead and said “it won’t work unless some of them decide to sing in our local dialect apart from Patois and refrain from using profane words”.
Sean Taylor, a young talented dancehall artiste in an interview with Kwaku B – de perfect gentleman on Anapua105.1FM, said he does not agree with that one bit.
“I don’t agree with that one bit. Dancehall music had been tagged “No Future” when it began in the late 70s in the Jamaica. When it began in Ghana they said it had no future, we are in 2015 [and] dancehall is making it and they are saying it still has no future so I’m wondering which future they are talking about. Music is dynamic, at a certain point dancehall became the biggest thing even in Ghana. Last year a dancehall artiste was the Artist of the year and this year too the same thing so dancehall music having no future- I don’t agree with it. It has a lot of potential, in fact dancehall has the brightest future if you ask me. Dancehall is growing; dancehall is an international genre of music. Dancehall is not only loved in Ghana, it is loved in the whole Africa, some part of America, Europe and even in Asia, this tells us that dancehall is global music.”
In respect to the comments by Blakk Rasta, Sean Taylor had the following to say:
“All I will tell Blakk Rasta who happens to be a very good friend of mine and a man who I respect very much is that, he should better his corner because he is doing well in brightening his corner through music and leave dancehall to music for those of us who are doing it. We are going to make sure dancehall continues and grows up and up”.
In response to Jamaican Reggae legend, Luciano, comments at a recent concert in Ghana about dancehall bringing violence into the hearts of the youth and how most of these artist start out on a decent note but then veer off into morally reprehensible lifestyle and thereafter preaching this lifestyle, the GH artist said
“As a normal person if you start making progress in life you get a lot of people just hating you for your success and it’s the same in the music industry and as an artist once you get to that level you will experience that. Entertainment exposes artists to crowds more often so it is not the artist’s intention to get involved in any kind of violence but some people put violence on them.. It’s the nature of the job that makes it look like dancehall artists are violent. Its the kind of lyrics and songs dancehall artist sing. You will see artist A and artist B [going against each other] in a song so people will think that they are not on good terms but these artists will be at same club having fun without the fans knowing it. Because of that it puts the artist in a very critical situation so sometime some of these things are not well understood by fans and then they turn out to take it in a different way that’s why it makes it look like the artist are violent but the artist themselves they don’t like the violence. When there is peace there will be more money for the artist, when there’s no peace nobody will come to a venue for a show”
Asked for his opinion on the Ghana Music Awards, Sean Taylor expressed some concern about its lack of inclusion for other region’s artist.
“Its the Ghana Music Awards not Accra Music Awards. There are so many artists in other regions who are doing very well but never get a chance to enter into the Ghana Music Awards. They should make it representative. If it is the Ghana Music Awards then they it should cover all the regions not just Accra because there are artist who are doing very well in the other regions that we don’t know about. It is not their fault but rather their{MUSIGA} responsibility to look for these artists and award them. Ghana music awards is the only big award show in Ghana so they should do it well”
