Coach Benni McCarthy’s Kenya Team beats Morocco, 1-0 in CHAN game!
Another CHAN win for Bafana Bafana legend and ex-Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy! Ten-man Harambee Stars outclass Morocco in high-octane showdown as Kenya’s Chrispine Erambo sees red
For the second straight game, the East Africans had to face their continental rivals numerically disadvantaged after another red card.
Kenya registered a crucial 1-0 African Nations Championship (CHAN) win after seeing off Morocco at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday.
Despite playing with 10 men, Kenya withstood pressure and ensured they remained unbeaten in the tournament.
Kenya survived in the seventh minute when Morocco almost claimed an opening goal. A poor clearance and poor communication between goalkeeper Bryne Omondi and skipper Michael Kibwage handed the North Africans a clear chance, but Ait Khalid’s effort hit the post.
Morocco were forced into a 22nd-minute change as Youness El Khabi came on to replace Ayoub Mouloula, who got injured.
Tusker FC forward Ryan Ogam broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. After a sleek team move, the striker was spotted in a good position to score, and he did not disappoint; the youngster created some space in a crowded area and unleashed a left-footed low drive that landed into the bottom-right corner.
After taking the lead, Harambee Stars were reduced to 10 men as Chrispine Erambo was red-carded. The referee sent the Kenyan midfielder out after a VAR review that showed the Kenyan dangerously tackling his opponent with a high boot.
This is the second game Kenya suffered a red card after Marvin Nabwire was sent off against Angola.
Kenya’s celebrations across the touchline and on the stands were cut short after an initial decision to award Stars a penalty was overruled in the 53rd minute.
After Boniface Muchiri was brought down, the referee pointed to the spot but overturned his decision after a VAR check. The Ulinzi Stars’ attacking midfielder was brought down just outside the box; it emerged from the check.
