Newmont issues statement on Kenyasi Shooting Incident
Newmont Ghana has issued a statement in regards to the shooting incident that occurred on the 15th of November 2022. It reads:
Community Unrest at Kenyasi No.2
Accra, 15th November 2022 – There are confirmed reports of a shooting incident between uniformed police officers and some residents of Kenyasi No. 2, one of Newmont’s Ahafo mine’s host communities. The incident happened in the early hours of today. The circumstances surrounding the shooting is unclear, as there are conflicting accounts. One community resident was killed during the incident, while four others have been injured and receiving treatment.
Newmont is saddened by the turn of events and sympathizes with the family and friends of the deceased and those injured.
Following this incident, a group of people attacked the residential facilities of Newmont’s Ahafo South mine, putting the lives of employees and their families at risk, amidst looting and vandalizing of properties.
The relevant regulatory authorities have been notified of the incident, and Newmont is cooperating with the Police with their investigations.
The company is also working closely with security personnel who have been deployed to the scene to keep the situation under control.
