“I have said that I believe that Nana Akufo-Addo will be an excellent President in 2016 and I think that I stand by that. That is not to say that the door is locked or shut against those who may be interested in future in 2020 or 2024”, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie told XYZ Breakfast Show host Nana Kwaku Agyemang on Thursday.
Sir John, as he is popularly known, vowed his unflinching support for the twice-defeated presidential Candidate a few months ago and said Nana Akufo-Addo will go for a third attempt even if he were in a wheelchair.
His blatant bias for the former Attorney General gored the axe of many potential Aspirants in the party, especially Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku who openly disagreed with him and urged toleration of dissenting views.
Former Aspirant Alan Kyeremanten, on Wednesday told XYZ News that his interest in contesting the flagbearership slot has not withered.
“I have an interest in contesting but this is not the forum and the time for me to make an announcement about my intention”, he said.
He nonetheless noted that: “…The issue is not who is leading the NPP; the issue is how we work together as a unified party to come back into power in 2016”.
According to him, Ghanaians are yearning for the return of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power.
“…I believe that the people of Ghana are waiting to put the Government back into power in 2016 to provide the same kind of progressive, constructive and forward-looking leadership that we did during the eight years that we were in power…under the NPP administration”.
